This isn’t for not seeing a doctor until the last minute. This study is of people being admitted for emergencies like falling off of a ladder or getting into a car crash. Despite their best intentions (and I believe a lot of anti-reform people are generally afraid of the costs and are not just defending a corrupt insurance industry), those fighting against a public option are fighting to kill people. The economy is in the toilet, but this has to happen.

It’s time to move beyond the forces of good vs. the insurance industry and the teabaggers. There’s a lot of room for a rational debate on cost controls and preventative medicine within the framework of universal coverage. Beneath the yelling and fear-mongering, Republicans have a lot of valid points about interstate competition and malpractice litigation, so lets get that in the bill and move this thing forward.

Shit’s about to get real in the Senate. Put your gloves on, the insurance industry’s little employer-rationed scam kills 45,000 a year, and neither them nor the Republicans on their payroll are about to let that go.

Apparently reducing a once-great company based on innovation into a second-rate PC maker wasn’t enough. She announced her candidacy in The OC Register, Orange County’s broadsheet answer to the New York Post, or as my mother used to call it, “bird cage liner.”

Here’s the highlights:

• She didn’t vote a lot.

• She doesn’t know that government bills and budgets are already on-line.

• She wants to remove environmental protections from agribusiness.

• Her solution to healthcare is the stock republican line, malpractice reform and cross-state competition. (Both of which I think are good ideas the Dems should include, but neither of which will actually solve the problem).

She closes her announcement with the line “Put me to work for you. Together we can turn things around.” It’s important to remember that during her disastrous 5 years as HP CEO the company’s valuation fell by about 60%, earning her a spot on Condé Nast Portfolio’s list of the 20 worst American CEO’s of all time. But she traveled with a hairdresser, so you know, she’s totally qualified for like, um, stuff.
